Throwing is a ranged attack executed with an item. To throw an item, press t, select the target and confirm with enter.

General

Thrown item becomes a projectile and follows similar rules to other ranged attacks. Unlike firearms, it does not bypass target's dodge, instead target's dodge will effectively decrease your thrown accuracy.

Once it hits something, the thrown item may drop down to the floor, embed in the target or shatter (if made of glass). Chance of embedding depends on item's size and type of damage dealt (bashing-only items will not embed). Shattering glass items deal extra cutting damage.

Thrown items of volume 3 and more bypass "hard to hit" property of Skeletons and similar enemies.

Throwing an item incurs a small stamina cost dependent on item's weight.

Range

Range of a thrown item depends on its weight (optimal weight is 150 g), its volume (lower than 4 is optimal) and your strength stat. Low throwing skill or strength can cap the range. Active Railgun CBM doubles range of thrown iron and steel items, but does not allow bypassing the low skill/strength cap.

Accuracy

Accuracy of the thrown item depends on its volume (1 to 4 is optimal), user's throwing skill, dexterity, perception and strength and user's hand and eye encumbrance. Skill below 3 is especially bad.

Accuracy of a hit is decreased by target's dodge (including from small size). High accuracy will multiply the damage on a hit and speed up skill training. Effects of accuracy are the most pronounced when it is already high. For this reason throwing is best used at close range.

Damage

Damage of the thrown item increases with its melee damage, weight and your strength, but decreases with item's volume. Active Railgun CBM doubles damage of thrown iron or steel items.

Low skill will prevent cutting/piercing damage from being applied. Chance to apply cutting damage is (20 + 12 * skill)%.

Move cost

Move cost of throwing an item depends on its volume and weight and user's skill, dexterity and torso encumbrance. It is of comparable magnitude to move cost of melee attacks with the same item.
