Template talk:Mutationtable
Too many mutations
This table is going to get VERY bloated very quickly. The old table has 20 categories and Chimera has 33 mutations in it. The template at the moment can only handle 20 of each. To make this work, the Navbox Template will need to be expanded a lot. I just don't think that will be worth it. We will end up with a massive table full of repeats and way too difficult to edit.
My plan is to instead break everything up according to the mutation lines, making a separate table for each category. We can then separate starting traits, basic mutations and post-threshold mutations into separate groups. This will also make it possible to keep the current colour coordination. The List of mutations' page might be abandoned entirely by me in favour for a mutation category page.
If you think it is worth working on the table, feel free to do so.
- There's no hard limits to the amount of entries for a navbox. You can have more than 20 headers or links. For headers, just increment the numbers as needed. If you think this can be complex, check this one I had to make. I don't think this would need to be that complex, though.
- The changes to the mutations section is quite similar to what I had to deal with when cleaning up bionics. It's going to be extremely slow and tedious, but there's no way around it. Just cheer up knowing that you won't be doing this alone (as I used to). I'll give a hand if I can, although right now my hands are quite full working on the new updating system.
- While the navbox will idd come handy, I was thinking on tackling this mess that is mutations from the ground up, which is by splitting each mutation in its own page and then transcluding them as needed. See what I've done with this test list of Alpha mutations for an example. Each mutation or trait has now its own page (there was one that wasn't defined in the wiki, though). Those mutation pages are now transcluded into the list page, but they can also be transcluded to the traits one once all this is finished (or it can be done concurrently, it doesn't matter).
- Forgot to mention that links are case sensitive. To make sure that any link or any search leads to the new page, no matter the case the user or contributor is using, you will need to create new pages with the alternate case (usually all lowercase) redirecting to the proper one. See this for an example.

- As I see that you're already working on the chopping, I think it'd be better to remove the Sandbox category from the new pages. I added it as I was making them for the test page, but as all this is probably going to be used for the final version, keeping the tag will force us to revise all the new pages and remove that category manually. So, better to avoid that, if possible.
- Also, don't get too focused on the color coding. While it makes the entries nicer and it might be somewhat handy, its use and color choice is not based in the game at all, it's actually totally arbitrary. Personally, I'd just get rid of all that nonsense and make simple lists (which I find way easier to navigate and read), but all this is legacy of the old Whale's wiki and we have to deal with it. Anyway, as said, you can overlook, change, delete and whatever you might think of about those colors. --Kenoxite (talk) 06:03, 20 December 2014 (PST)
Table looks good and the headers are more legible with the new colors. Nice going. KA101 (talk) 16:26, 22 December 2014 (PST)
Capitals
When asked, KA101 told me that only the first letter should be capitalized for anything on the wiki, but all the trait and mutation names have the first letter of every word capitalized in the game. Currently, only Alpha has mutations that follow KA101's instruction, but most of them haven't been made yet, so it will be relatively easy to move everything, just have to go through and change all the letters. Will need to move a few pages either way.
So, how should we do this?

- That's because (for whatever reason, dates back to Whales) trait/mutation names are so capitalized in-game. Wiki follows game style, so the trait names are capitalized. Sorry for the unclarity. I've gotten all the JSONs and sync/parser code uploaded per Kenoxite's plan, so probably a good idea to check with xem and see if you can pull the information direct from those, rather than typing all that in manually. - Thanks for the clarification. I'll fix Alpha when I get a chance. Not sure if Kenoxite's plan will be able to handle working with the tables though. It was always meant to be semi-autonomous and I'm not sure if it will be smart enough to handle categorizing everything, though it will be nice if it can. Nice to know that the parser code is coming on, it will really help maintaining the wiki. You guys really get things done, especially with 0.C already in pre-release. I am putting things a bit on hold here though, since Kenoxite said he was going to rebuild the Trait template, but the parser code has to come first.JayJayForce (talk) 14:45, 6 January 2015 (PST)
