This lava has flowed to the surface through some horrible accident. Stepping into it will deal lot of damage to your feet and legs. And even being near to the lava can be enough to severely overheat you. Lava (and magma) can be used to cook as a substitute for a nearby fire.
@ : "There is a LOT of heat coming out of there, even the stairs have melted away. Jump down? You won't be able to get back up. (y/n)"
If you see this message going down, don't descend. You will die. It means there is lava on the floor below, which usually also means there is no stair going up.
In the rare case you manage to get a stair under the lava, there is also a similar message for going up the stairs. Going down is again, impossible.
